What is it like to work at Midland Ecology?
Midland Ecology is a continually growing professional team of qualified surveyors, licensed ecologists and support staff. All based within the Midlands, less experienced surveyors learn from our senior ecologists and all benefit from sharing their knowledge with each other.
Through a mix of field, home and office working our staff have the opportunity to work independently within the comfort of a well-established and friendly support network. You would be joining a very strong team, who work well together to deliver the highest of standards for our clients but can also have a laugh together at the same time. My proudest achievement working for Midland Ecology is gaining my level one bat licence. This feels like a significant accomplishment and stepping stone in my career. I am looking forward to achieving my level two bat licence in the future.
I have worked for Midland Ecology since May 2020. I was employed as a Seasonal Ecologist in May 2020, where I was promoted to Graduate Ecologist in September 2020, Assistant Ecologist in August 2021 and Consultant Ecologist in December 2022.
Before working with Midland Ecology, I had undertaken several ecological field surveys (including bat surveys, great crested newt translocation and dormouse surveys), with a limited amount of experience in writing ecological reports.
During my time with Midland Ecology, I have been involved in several different projects (commercial and residential), assisting and shadowing several of our Ecologists on surveys and being involved in the writing of reports. I now lead my own projects, and have a broad range of experience in all sorts of projects. I feel very lucky to have gained a Great Crested Newt Level 1 Class Licence and Bat Level 1 Class Licence over my time with Midland Ecology.
At university, I undertook a BSc (Hons) in Zoology with Conservation. After finishing university, I was unsure what career I wanted to do. I started researching jobs within the natural environment and came across ecology. After researching ecology, I started volunteering with bat groups and signed myself up for a course in the Introduction to Ecology. This course described what was involved in being an Ecologist, and after completing this course, I knew I wanted to be involved. I started a job as an Ecological Field Surveyor and started undertaking ecological surveys.
I was recommended Midland Ecology by a past colleague. When I spoke to the Director and started working for the company, I really liked how welcoming everyone was. From the get go, I was treated as part of the team. This was very reassuring especially after moving to the area and not knowing many people.
My working week changes during the summer and winter. During the summer, we undertake several nocturnal bat surveys (dusk emergence and dawn re-entry surveys) which means working times vary. We all get involved in nocturnal bat surveys, and share the load, so some days I work evenings or mornings, with some report writing in the day; other days I undertake day-time surveys out in the field. In the winter, we usually work roughly 9-5 undertaking Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRAs) and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), and writing up the reports. A usual week in the winter involves two days out in the field, and three days report writing and liaising with clients.
The most enjoyable part of my role with Midland Ecology is that every day is different. No two projects are the same, therefore we undertake a range of surveys for a mix of projects. The week is very varied: some days involve report writing whereas other days involve being outside all day. The flexible and hybrid working with Midland Ecology also means I can adapt my working day round personal commitments.
My progression and growth has always been recognised working for Midland Ecology. We are encouraged to undertake training courses often, and my colleagues are always open to talking things over and discussing projects. This allows us to build on each other’s expertise and get a second opinion on projects. I continue to have regular discussions with the company directors about the progression of my career while working with Midland Ecology; including annual reviews to monitor development and future opportunities.
